Jeff Cunningham was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania and stayed locally for college where he attended Edinboro University. Jeff earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Speech Communication with the goal of working in television news. While in his senior year of College, Jeff began to work for the local ABC affiliate in Erie, WJET-TV 24 and made his way to the news department as a videographer. Jeff left WJET to go to law school, but did not leave working in television. In law school, Jeff secured a job with WOOD-TV 8, the Grand Rapids, Michigan NBC affiliate as an editor and eventually left to go to the FOX affiliate, as part of the very first news crew for that station. As he got deeper into his Studies, Jeff left the newsroom to work freelance television production. This lead to several steady jobs producing a monthly news program in Detroit and live and recorded sports broadcasts locally for Comcast in Lansing and nationally with ESPN and ABC Sports.
Upon graduating from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, Jeff left the television business to focus on the practice of law. At that time, Jeff relocated to Pinellas County, Florida.
Jeff has been practicing law since 2004. For 13 years, Jeff worked for the Public Defender's Office for Pinellas County. During his time as an Assistant Public Defender, Jeff handled a variety of cases. He has handled ordinance and misdemeanor cases as well as numerous felony and capital felony cases such as sexual battery and murder. For eight years of his career, Jeff was assigned to Drug Court and Violation of Probation Court.
Drug Court was a rewarding experience. The goal of Drug Court was to get treatment for individuals that were arrested for felony possession charges and other charges related to substance abuse. While working in this court, Jeff had to ensure that his clients' due process rights were upheld. This position also required coordination with the Drug Court administrative staff and treatment providers to ensure that the clients were receiving the best possible treatment for their substance abuse issues. It is sad to say, but the only way to get drug treatment at little to no cost to an individual is to get arrested with a felony drug charge.
While in Drug Court, Jeff was also assigned to a court that only heard felony violations of probation. This position was detail orientated and required complete understanding of felony scoresheets and sentencing structures. This position was a high-volume and fast-paced environment and lead to many positive outcomes for Jeff's clients.
Jeff has handled numerous cases including domestic violence, DUIs, Driving without a License, thefts, assaults, batteries, burglaries to just name a few. Whatever your current legal issue is, Jeff will give you an confidential and honest opinion regarding your matter.
